September was the busiest month of the year at Bweyale Vocational Education. The new cohort started in masonry, carpentry and tailoring, and the school ran at full capacity for the first time.
Workshops and tools
Thanks to gifts from supporters in British Columbia, three workshops now have complete tool sets. The masonry yard has trowels, levels and a mixer. The carpentry shop has a second row of benches. The tailoring room gained 6 treadle machines that run without electricity.
“The tools arrived on Monday. By Wednesday the apprentices were teaching each other how to use them.”

Teaching the teachers
Two volunteer experts spent a combined three weeks at the school. A journeyman carpenter from Kamloops worked beside the carpentry instructors on joinery and on how to plan a lesson. A technician coached the IT instructors on repairing the school's laptops.
Both visits ended the same way: the school's own instructors ran the final practical, with the visitors watching.
What we learned
Lesson plans written together are used far more than lesson plans handed over. For the next visits we are putting more time at the start into planning with the instructors, and less into demonstrations.
Next quarter: the second well, a new tool library shelf, and the first graduating class of the year.
